Elementary

Our elementary school caters to students in kindergarten through 5th grade. Whereas in earlier grades, students have one teacher, as of 3rd grade, classes are departmentalized so that students have an English Language Arts/Social Studies teacher and a Math/Science teacher. Incorporating both whole group and needs-based small group instruction, teachers ensure that access is afforded to all students regardless of their academic starting point. Daily instruction from our elementary team is curated from Eureka Math, Fundations, and other DCPS curriculum. Our educators supplement their teaching with a variety of digital platforms, such as Lexia and iReady, adaptive programs that help personalize instruction as well as meet the demands of our 21st-century learners. All students in grades K-5 also engage in a range of Specials classes, including Music, Art, Physical Education and Latin. As a school that truly values the benefit of learning beyond the walls of a classroom, opportunities are made available for students to journey to institutions such as the Kennedy Center, the National Zoo, Smithsonian Museums, and even take overnight trips to Hard Bargain Farm. Our longstanding FoodPrints program also allows students to learn how to care for our beautiful school garden and prepare healthy meals in our demo kitchen, all while connecting these concepts to what they are learning in class.
