Important Letter from LSAT about building capacity

Dear SWWFS Parents/Guardians and Staff,

On behalf of the SWWFS LSAT, I am writing to provide an update on the over-enrollment concerns for the 2019-2020 school year and the projected enrollment growth over the next several years. I will also address the resulting need for the immediate expansion of our available classroom space.

Currently, according to DCPS data, we are enrolled at 105%. Though the building capacity is 513 students, we have 537 students attending our school. It is anticipated that our student population will continue to rise, due to an increase in new enrollments and an increase in re-enrollments at all levels. DCPS projects that we will reach 656 students in school year 2025. Although the largest growth is occurring at the middle school level right now, it has had a significant impact on students and staff at all levels.

At our LSAT meeting this morning, we received an update from DCPS Chief Operating Officer Patrick Davis regarding the short-term plan to provide additional instructional space. Currently, the plan is to convert the two balconies over the small gym into two classrooms with an anticipated completion date of late February/early March. Additionally, DCPS is looking into securing the funding to bring four portables onto the property, however they do not anticipate these spaces becoming available to us until the 2020-2021 school year.

DCPS is currently in the process of developing its 2021 budget which will be submitted by the Mayor to the DC Council for passage early next year. Although we have been advocating for short term solutions to address the overcrowding, it is now critical that we begin to advocate to move our scheduled renovation up one year to begin the process in 2021.

We have an opportunity to advocate for our school community at the ANC 2A meeting on October 16th at 7:00pm at the West End Library where Mayor Muriel Bowser will be present to speak and respond to questions. We are asking all families, staff members, and community supporters to attend this meeting (wearing SWWFS gear or purple) and speak out to the Mayor about our urgent situation. The West End Library is just a short walk from our school and is located at 2301 L St NW. Please let us know if you will be attending the ANC meeting and if you would like to speak by completing this google form .

We will continue to provide updates to the school community as significant developments occur. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at
