Metro is seeking feedback about limited-stop bus service going cash-free

Dear Community Partners,

Metro is looking at ways to speed up bus service and is considering going cash-free on limited-stop Metrobus routes by only allowing payment with a pre-loaded SmarTrip® card. Our office has identified your organization as being located in the area where a limited-stop Metrobus route provides service, and would like to share this information with you, so that your constituents and employees are aware of this proposal. Current limited-stop routes under consideration include the following: 16Y, 37, 39, 59, A9, G9, J4, K9, S9, X9, REX, and Metroway, as well as future new limited-stop routes. Metrobus route 79 MetroExtra is currently cash-free as part of a pilot, which began in June, 2018. All other local routes would continue to accept cash.

We would like to invite you to attend, on Monday, September 17th at 6:30p.m., an open house which Metro is hosting on the proposed cash-free on limited-stop bus routes. It will be held at the Metro Headquarters Building (600 Fifth St. NW, Washington, DC 20001) and followed by a public hearing at 7:00p.m. You are also invited to comment online (SP/EN) by Monday, September 24th, 2018.

Also, since last Wednesday September 5th, 2018, contracted outreach workers in Metro-branded yellow aprons have been onboard buses and at key bus stops notifying customers about the upcoming proposal for limited-stop buses to go cash-free, distributing surveys and encouraging customers to provide their feedback via the paper survey, online survey, or to provide comments in-person at the public hearing. Each team have bilingual Spanish speakers, and some teams also have Amharic or Chinese speakers—they are wearing buttons that identify them as bilingual.

Please click here to obtain information in Spanish, and copies of the notice in Amharic, Chinese, French, Korean, and Vietnamese. If you need additional information or materials, such as copies of paper surveys, or if you would like to meet with us directly, please feel free to contact me directly at 202-962-1349; or via email
