The Lottery Process

The “Lottery” can mean two things: the Pre-Kindergarten Lottery or the K -12 Out-of-Boundary Lottery. The Pre-Kindergarten Lottery is required for all students wanting to enroll in PK3/PK4 while the K-12 Out-of-Boundary Lottery is only required for out-of-boundary students wanting to enroll in K-8th.

Parents or caregivers may submit one application per student to enter the lottery.  The lottery application is completed entirely online.  There are no paper applications for the lottery.  More information about the DC Public Schools and DC Public Charter Schools lottery can be found at myschooldc.org.

Early Childhood/Pre-Kindergarten Lottery

Registration for the Pre-K lottery opens in December, the year prior to the desired academic enrollment year.  The actual lottery occurs in March. Results are posted on-line and mailed to families. Families have until May 1 to accept their offer. Preference is given first to Siblings of current SWWFS Students, second to Students who live in-boundary for SWWFS, third to Students with Proximity to SWWFS– otherwise children are selected through the lottery’s matching algorithm.

The number of slots available for enrollment will determine the number of children selected. If more than one child from a family is entered into a school’s lottery, each child is entered individually; hence, the lottery does not guarantee that all children from the same family will be selected.

Kindergarten – 8th Grade

Registration for the DCPS out-of-boundary lottery opens in December, the year prior to desired academic enrollment year. In-boundary students have the right to attend grades K-8th and they must enroll directly with the school.

Results of the lottery are usually posted on-line and sent home in March. Families have until May 1st to accept their lottery placement.

First preference for spaces in the out-of-boundary lottery is given to Siblings of current SWWFS Students, then to Students with Proximity to SWWFS– otherwise children are selected through the lottery’s matching algorithm.
